Professional Bio
Michael Waul is an assistant professor, medical student career advisor, associate residency program director, and wellness champion in the Department of Dermatology at UCSF. Michael is a native of Jamaica. He attended Harvard Medical School before completing residency at UCSF, serving as chief resident in his final year of training.
Michael's academic work improves the experiences and elevates the voices of underrepresented people in medicine through innovation in recruitment and retention; optimizing trainee wellbeing; and curriculum development. Current research focuses on the Inclusive Skin Color Project, in collaboration with the School of Medicine's Anti-Oppression Curriculum Initiative. This endeavor advances medical education and enhances patient care by increasing access to resources showcasing the full spectrum of skin color. Michael's additional research includes developing and implementing a restorative justice framework to build community and address minority trainee burnout.
Michael is an avid fan of tennis and track and field. He enjoys learning more about San Francisco and discovering new ways to experience the Bay Area.
