DEI & CLINICAL TRIALS: MAKING GOOD ON PROMISES
Allison Kalloo, MPH is a patient recruitment specialist bridging cultural divides and breaking the engagement stalemate in clinical trials. For more than 20 years, she has focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), optimizing recruitment tactics, patient education campaigns, and community engagement initiatives that fuse science with the art of communication. Ms. Kalloo is the founder of Clinical Ambassador and iParticipate Incorporated and leads teams providing cultural relevance and patient-centricity for the pharma and research industries and broadening representation by making clinical trials relevant to lay individuals. She provides consultations, patient education, community engagement, mock trials, and focus groups that inform strategy for study marketing campaigns and other tactics that support DEI. Ms. Kalloo graduated from The Madeira School, North Carolina Central University, and Yale School of Public Health.
CLINICAL TRIAL DIVERSITY: IMPACT EXPERIENCE AND BEYOND
James H. Powell, MD is a graduate and former faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College. After 24 years as a clinical research executive in the pharmaceutical industry, he led the National Medical Association’s Project IMPACT (Increase Minority Participation and Awareness of Clinical Trials). He designed and directed programs to develop physicians as clinical investigators and educate consumers on the benefits and protections of clinical trials. He is a past member of the Secretary’s (HHS) Advisory Committee on Human Research Protections, and a charter member of the Alliance of Multicultural Physicians, advocating for clinical trial inclusion. He is currently Chief Medical Officer of knowRX Health, a company focused on digital innovations for therapeutic equity.
PRACTICE VS GESTURE: IMPARTING OWNERSHIP TO CLINICAL RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS
Gretchen C. Wartman is Vice President for Policy and Program of the National Minority Quality Forum (NMQF), and Director of the NMQF Institute for Equity in Health Policy and Practice. Ms. Wartman also directs the NMQF National Alliance for Brain Health and Awareness. Ms. Wartman has more than 40 years of experience in the public and private sectors in health policy strategy and analysis, issue advocacy, and program administration. Prior to her tenure with NMQF, Ms. Wartman held positions with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, including serving as the Title V/Maternal and Child Health Director, and Director of the Division of Nutritional Health and Services. Ms. Wartman is a Peer Reviewer for the Journal of Healthcare, Science and The Humanities.
