Dirk ElstonDirk M. Elston, MD, FAAD is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He is Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and has served as president of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society of Dermatopathology. He has served as Honorary Professor at China Medical University in Shenyang China, Guest Professor at the Xiangya School of Medicine, Central South University in Changsha, China, Visiting Professor, Peking University School of Medicine, Beijing, China, and Adjunct Professor, Tongji University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China. He is an honorary member of the German and French Dermatological Societies. Dr. Elston graduated from Jefferson Medical College and did his dermatology residency at Walter Reed Medical Center and a dermatopathology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. He is the author of over 565 peer-reviewed publications and 75 textbook chapters. He is the Associate Editor in Chief of eMedicine dermatology, is one of the lead authors of Andrews Diseases of the Skin, and Editor in Chief of the Requisites in Dermatology series of textbooks. He received the 2020 American Academy of Dermatology Gold Medal, the 2008 Walter Nickel Award for Excellence in Dermatopathology Education, and the 2013 Founder’s Award of the American Society of Dermatopathology. Other teaching awards include the UIC, Rush, and Cook County Dermatology residents teaching award, St Luke’s-Roosevelt Volunteer Teacher of the Year Award, Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Medicine Outstanding Teacher Award, Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Pathology Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Darl Vanderplueg Excellence in Teaching Award.

HOW CAN PUBLISHERS IMPROVE DIVERSITY?

Russell P. Hall, IIIRussell P. Hall, III, MD is the J. Lamar Callaway Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Hall graduated from Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, and the University of Missouri – Columbia School of Medicine. Dr. Hall was trained in internal medicine and dermatology at St. Louis University, the University of Missouri- Columbia, and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He completed a research fellowship in the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Hall has published research in more than 145 articles in peer-reviewed publications and has contributed to more than 37 book chapters; he is currently the Editor of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology Innovations. Hall’s areas of expertise include immune-mediated skin diseases.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION AT JAMA DERMATOLOGY

Arash MostaghimiArash Mostaghimi, MD, MPH, FAAD is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology, Director of the Dermatology Inpatient Service, and Co-Director of the Complex Medical Dermatology Fellowship at Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Board-certified in Dermatology, Internal Medicine, and Clinical Informatics, Dr. Mostaghimi is a practicing physician specializing in the dermatologic care of inpatients and outpatients with complex dermatology disorders. His research centers on understanding variations in dermatologic care and improving care delivery to optimize resource utilization, encourage patient autonomy, and reduce disparities. Dr. Mostaghimi earned his medical degree and Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard Medical School and the Harvard Kennedy School in 2007. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and Dermatology in the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Combined Program, where he also served as Chief Medical Resident.
